A Practical Look at the First Week
When the new smart hub arrived on Monday, I had a clear plan: unbox it, plug it in, and have the whole flat responding to voice commands by lunch. Reality, as it usually does, had other ideas.
The first hurdle was the Wi-Fi. My router sits in the study at the back of the house, and the living room where I wanted the hub is two walls and a hallway away. The signal dropped every few minutes, which meant the hub kept losing its connection mid-setup. I ended up moving a cheap range extender from the bedroom to the passage, and that solved most of it. Not glamorous, but it worked.
Then came the sensors. The kit included three door sensors and a motion detector, all from a local brand I'd seen on Takealot for under R400. Pairing them was straightforward — each one has a small button on the side, and the app walks you through the process. The motion detector took three attempts because I'd mounted it too high, and the detection zone missed the middle of the room. A quick reposition to about chest height fixed that.
The real lesson came on day three. I'd set up an automation to turn on the passage light when the front door opens after sunset. It worked perfectly the first night. The second night, nothing. Turns out the battery in the door sensor was flat — the unit had been sitting in the box for months, and the included battery was already drained. A fresh pair of AAs sorted it, but it reminded me that cheap hardware needs a bit of babysitting.
By Friday, I had three working automations and a list of things I'd do differently next time. The hub itself is fine for the price, but the app's interface takes some getting used to. The scheduling screen is cluttered, and the notification settings are buried three menus deep. Still, for someone starting out, it's a reasonable entry point.
The week ended with a small win. I set up a routine that turns off all the lights and plugs at 11pm, and it's run without a hitch for two nights straight. That alone has made the setup feel worth it. The rest is just tweaking.
